Why Denver Ballet Theatre Academy?
Choosing a reputable dance studio can be daunting.
Here are some tips to help you get started! No matter what your future goals in dance, it is always important to carefully find a school that will provide your child with the best instruction. As the U.S. has no licensing or regulations regarding dance studios, potential students should definitely beware. Here are a few points to consider when choosing a school for your child. DBT Academy meets all of them and goes beyond.
- First Impressions: Don't choose a studio just by a website. Plan a visit in person, ask to observe classes and the studio environment. Set up an appointment to meet with the Director, not just front desk help. This should not be a problem for a studio truly interested in the student body and will reflect how much care will be placed in developing a mentoring relationship throughout a student's training.
- Structured Program: Look for a structured program for each level, with a curriculum based on a method such as Vaganova, Cecchetti, Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) for ballet. Some form of evaluation or examination is desirable to see if the students have completed the curriculum and skills for their current level before promoting them to the next. Children have their own timetable for development and placing a child in a level for which they are unprepared for may cause frustration and creation of bad technique habits.
- Teacher Qualifications: Finding qualified teachers is probably one of the most critical elements in the search for a dance studio. Exposure to a poorly trained instructor in the early stages can lead to injuries and bad habits that are hard to reverse. Look for someone who has danced with a professional company, has a degree in dance, and/or has taught at reputable schools. Keep in mind, professional dance experience alone does not necessarily make a good teacher. In the end, teacher quality is determined by the results achieved. Be sure to look at student achievement!
- Professional Focus: The purpose of a truly professional dance school is to ensure your child’s continuous, safe growth as a dancer. Some recreational schools tend to devote the majority of their class time to preparing for the annual school recital, rather than firmly establishing proper technique. Ask when rehearsals are for productions (if any) and when students begin working on their recital pieces.
- Performance Opportunities: Dance is a performance art and students should have plenty of opportunities to perform throughout the year. While exposure to professional dancers through guest artist involvement is important, look for a program where student performance is stressed at all levels. Do the students have the chance to grow into soloist and principal roles as they progress? Or will they dance mainly corps de ballet (group dances) and fill in as background dancers for "professionals". Look for a school that will give their students as many unique performance opportunities as possible. A school that encourages student performance is a school that is focused solely on educating and training dancers and will not be distracted by the demands of running a "professional company".
- Flooring and Studio Environment: The studio floor should have proper covering (marley is preferable) and should be raised and sprung to prevent injury. It is easy to be dazzled by "fancy" studios and waiting rooms, parents should understand that the finished performance product and quality teaching are what is important, not size or architecture of the facility.
- Disciplined Environment: A dance school should have a sense of structure to it and adequate basic facilities. Rooms should have barres and mirrors on at least one wall. A set list of uniform regulations with regards to leotard and tights, proper hair styles and neat shoes, also suggests that the school is well regulated, disciplined, and a positive learning environment.
- Tuition: Annual tuition costs and incidentals, such as recital or costume fees should be made clearly available to you before your child enrolls. If significant cost differences exist between schools try to compare the quality of the programs offered, the number of classes offered and the professionalism of the faculty. While it may be tempting to start with the cheapest program available, remember that the end results may be far from positive, if not harmful.
- Student Achievements: Look at the achievements of current students and alumni in comparison to the number of years the studio has been operational. Are any students dancing professionally? Are students attending nationally recognized summer intensives? Are there any international exchange, performance, and/or competition opportunities?
The Vaganova Method

Denver Ballet Theatre Academy’s ballet program follows the internationally renowned Vaganova training syllabus - a progressive and graded training system that has produced some of the best dancers in the world.
This method is a ballet technique and training system devised by the Russian dancer and pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova (1879–1951). It was derived from the teachings of the Premier Maitre de Ballet Marius Petipa, throughout the late 19th century. It was Agrippa Vaganova who perfected and cultivated this form of teaching classical ballet and turned it into a viable syllabus. The method fuses elements of traditional French style from the romantic era with the athleticism and virtuosity of Italian Cecchetti technique. The training system is designed to involve the whole body in every movement, with equal attention paid to the upper body, legs and feet. Vaganova believed that this approach increases consciousness of the body, thus creating a harmony of movement and greater expressive range.

"Ballet Fantastique's Professional Division classes follow the eight levels of the internationally renowned Vaganova Training Syllabus, a notated and progressive training program that has produced some of the best dancers in the world, including Anna Pavlova, Natalia Makarova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, the legendary choreographer George Balanchine, and professional dancers in almost every company in the world.
Originally developed by Mme. Agrippina Yakovlevna Vaganova over one hundred years ago, this method fused the romantic style of the French ballet and dramatic soulfulness of the Russian character with the athletic virtuosity that characterizes the Italian school to reform the old imperial style of ballet teaching.
Early training focuses on epaulement, or the stylized turning of the shoulders and body, which is partnered with the development of total stability and strength in the back to produce harmonious coordination of the body and continuity of movement. This core of strength enables consistently precise, easy movement of the body; the training in epaulement, in turn, instills in the dancer an intuitive anticipation of how best to use every part of his or her body to evoke breathtaking results, right down to the hands and eyes. The Vaganova Method's codified technical approach thus makes for INJURY-FREE training emphasizing the simultaneous development of both technical proficiency and individual artistry, and a complete range of movement expression that comes out of proper placement and a strong classical dance foundation.
This scientifically proven method involves the systematic study of all ballet movements by breaking them down into their separate elements and is characterized by impeccable precision, attention to detail, ease of execution, emotion-evoking grace, and individual creativity. Ballet Fantastique's highly-qualified instructors and coaches have backgrounds not only in the Vaganova method, but also in Vaganova pedagogy-so they not only know how to dance, they also know how to work with young people. Professional Division students at our Academy take a yearly level examination in which they are individually evaluated according to notated benchmarks and are given personal feedback on their strengths and artistic and technical development, and after which they are awarded well-deserved medals of achievement."

Our Preballet Program is especially geared for the "tiny dancer". Classes for dancers 18 months to 5 years old are a prelude to formal ballet instruction and introduce children to music and movement through a structured progression that stresses creativity, group interaction and following instructions. Children are placed in a safe and nurturing environment with a goal of helping them learn to move and to follow instructions. We use age appropriate music and props to enhance your child’s experience and inspire the love of dance.
Classes are for children between 5 and 8 years old. It consists of two levels – Ballet 1 and Ballet 2. Class is structured around mat-based conditioning exercises, barre and center-work focusing on musicality, strength, proper form, flexibility, coordination, and classical ballet terminology and movements, promoting physical strength and development. Students are promoted according to individual progress in acquiring technique and strength. Depending on the level, classes meet one to two times per week.
Designed for students between 10-14 years old who have already progressed through our Elementary Division syllabus. The Intermediate Division consists of three levels – Ballet 3-5. In the Intermediate levels, students are expected to take class three to four times per week and the students are exposed to higher levels of ballet technique. Placement in the intermediate division is based on many factors, including age, ability, experience, strength, and mental preparedness. Students often spend several years in each level as they progress and develop their skills. Additionally, students must be able to meet each level's requirements to progress to the next level. In level 4 beginning level pointe-work is introduced and developed in this level as a part of their technique class.
Our pre-professional advanced program concentrates on perfecting technique and developing artistry through intensive instruction. Placement in the advanced division is based on many factors, including age, ability, experience, strength, and mental preparedness. The Advanced Division includes Ballet 6-8. Pointe work is an integral part of all of these levels for girls. Students often spend several years in each level as they progress and develop their skills. Additionally, students must be able to meet each level's requirements to progress to the next level.
Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to modern dance, ballet, and other classical concert dance styles. Students with an established ballet foundation, for levels 5 and up, learn modern-influenced movement in contemporary class. Focusing on a grounded approach, floor work, barefoot articulation, expanded upper body and torso movement with improvisational/partner-work concepts expand our dancer's movement vocabulary and versatility. There is an emphasis on musicality, fluidity, coordination and rhythm with a wide variety of music/movement influence.
(PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle memory in achieving their personal best.
